A wildlife scientist has revealed the true reason why some people are more prone to being bitten by mosquitoes than others.
While many believe different blood types attract mozzies, biology researcher Ellie Sursara said the insects tend to bite people who have a higher metabolic rate and therefore emit more carbon dioxide.
The 35-year-old, from the Gold Coast Hinterland, told FEMAIL people release more CO2 when they are pregnant, excessively sweating or drinking alcohol.
Mosquitoes also thrive in warm, balmy weather, so an Aussie barbecue with people enjoying a beer is a haven for the pesky bugs.
Ellie said there are some measures people can take to avoid an itchy mozzie bite; however, the most effective method is to cover up and stay clean.

Many have argued mosquitoes are attracted to specific blood types; however, Ellie said there was little concrete evidence to support the claim.
‘The question about whether mosquitoes prefer a certain blood type is controversial and quite debatable,’ she said.
‘It’s obviously an area that is still being explored, but the current consensus is that it’s people who have a high metabolic rate.’
More carbon dioxide, which female mosquitoes are drawn to when reproducing, is released from those with a higher metabolic rate.
‘Male mosquitoes don’t bite, so if you’ve got a bit more lactic acid or heat coming from your body, you’ll be bitten by a female mosquito,’ Ellie explained.
