There is nothing to do with it: Paris is Paris. In this city fashion finds it most powerful expression, it may be because of the refinement and the history that the city expresses, or it may be because of French people fascinating accent, but the fashion week, here more that in any other place in the world, is considered as a pilgrimage for fashion lovers, as every year Paris fashion weeks renews its appointments, being able to surprise every year.
Despite the tough competition with the other fashion “Mecca” (London, Milan New York), in Paris fashion seems to wear new colors, new perfumes, which just here finds the right expression.
In Paris some of the most famous international fashion personalities begun their career and became famous, barcelona tröja like Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Yves Saint Laurent, who in this city found their style and the inspirations necessary to create amazing evening dresses, jeans, coats, man shirts, bags and spike heels.
But what does these fashion genius take as an inspiration? My it be the Montmartre autumn colors or the narrow cobblestone Latin Quarter streets, full of artists and painters, busy in creating a piece of art? Or maybe that inspiration comes rather from the affinity with the French culture, with the literary or cinematographic history of the capital?
Paris begun to call the shots in international fashion long before Gautier or Chanel, and precisely around 1870, with Luigi XIV and Marie Antoinette, it begun to catch on the Cul de Paris (literally Paris Ass), which was the trend of the long skirt that created a jutting effect, accentuating the bottom by the effect of the Tournure, an object which, put under clothes, amplified that effect.
In XX century then, took off some fashion houses, which were destined to be remembered as the biggest fashion houses ever: Maison Callot (1825), Callot sisters, the Maison Jacques Doucet are among the most famous; these fashion houses, together with others from the French capital, contributed to write the fashion history that never left Paris roads; even then Paris called the shots in fashion: Medeleine Vionnet indeed invented the revolutionary “bandy cut” of dresses which were fashionable in the Thirties all around Europe.
Piecemeal even men’s universe, which has always been less interested in fashion, begins to extend its target and men start to match with the classic dresses and casual outfit even accessories that, thanks to Paris fashion events, are now some essential elements in a man’s look. In Paris fashion week last edition Louis Vuitton adds original details to shoes and hats; Paul Gaultier does the same with hats and bandanas and Givenchy uses nose earrings. Haute couture French genius don’t stop their creativity because of the crisis and spread influence, as happens to the creations presented in Milan, extremely serious and sober.
